Summer Fun...

...is catching fireflies in the evenings! I remember catching fireflies as a child in central Texas and putting them in a jar. Now my kids are doing it and it's so cute to watch them run around the yard trying to catch them.

What an amazing creature God gave to us to enjoy!

What we're reading this week...

We are a family who loves to read. Jason and I have always been readers and hoped that our children would also enjoy books. We started reading to them when they were toddlers and have continued to do so. Part of the bedtime ritual every night is reading along with prayers and tucking in.

So, I thought I would start posting on Monday's what we're reading for the week. If you click on the image of the book, it will take you to Amazon's website where you can read the reviews and order the book if you wish. I frequently order used books from Amazon or take my list with me to Half Price Books

Here's what we're currently reading...

Hmm, I wonder who's reading this...
NOT me!

This is the second book in the series...
funny and entertaining!

We are still reading (and loving)
this book with Emily!

Ben loves "I Spy" books...
great for learning letters/phonics.

Abby loves this book!

Stepping out...

Yesterday, the music and worship in our church was very moving. I will just say right now, if you are not singing the song "Mighty to Save" in your contemporary service at your church, you MUST share it with your worship leader asap! It is a moving song that proclaims boldly that our God can move mountains and is mighty to save.

Music has a way of ushering me into the presence of the Holy Spirit in a very unique way. This song is on my short list of very powerful praise and worship songs.

I found this video of the song done by Hillsong on YouTube...

We also sang a song called "I Surrender". Man, I had a hard time singing this song yesterday. A friend of mine (Laurie) recently posted on her blog her experience in worship. She shared that if there is a song that is being sung and she cannot truly proclaim the words to the song, she doesn't sing along and went on to give an example from her experience. That has really stayed with me since reading it. So, yesterday, we sang the song "I Surrender". Here are the lyrics:

I'm giving You my heart and all that is within
I lay it all down for the sake of You my King
I'm giving you my dreams, I'm laying down my rights
I'm giving up my pride for the promise of new life

And I surrender
All to you, all to you

I'm singing You this song, I'm waiting at the cross
And all the world holds dear, I count it all as loss
For the sake of knowing You for the glory of Your name
To know the lasting joy, even sharing in Your pain

You might be scratching your head at this point wondering why I wouldn't be able to sing these lyrics yesterday. I mean, if you read them and re-read them, there's probably not anything that stands out that would make you question the song, right? Well, for me there's just one word, just one!

Here's where I'm coming from. I have some areas in my life that I have not completely surrendered over to the Lord; not out of biligerance, but out of fear. Now, what is the opposite of fear? Lack of faith... So, I have a couple of areas in my life that I am lacking in faith. I have not surrendered because of my fear (or lack of faith). So, yesterday, it was very hard for me to sing this song from the stage. The song is powerful and moving and it would have been very easy for me to engage musically in the song, but spiritually, I struggled.

I know we all have struggles in our lives; physical, emotional, spiritual. I've learned that even those around us who seem so put together also have struggles. This life is not easy and learning to love and trust a God that we cannot see is not easy. I've said before, our relationship with Him is a journey. Sometimes the path is easy and other times, it's rocky. I just happen to be on a rocky stretch right now. My first tendency is to run and hide until it passes, but I will miss out in the strengthening of my faith if I do this. I want to be able to sing 100% from my heart the words to "I Surrender", especially the word ALL!

There's a story in the Bible in Mark 9 about a father who brings his son to be healed from the evil spirits that are controlling him. The father approaches Jesus and says, "If you can do anything, do it..." Jesus answers, "Ifs? There are no ifs among believers..." The father then witnesses the healing of his son through the power of Jesus. He proclaims in Mark 9:24 "Then I believe. Help me with my doubts!" Just as the father did, it's time for me to pray and believe that Jesus will help me with my doubts. It's time for me to stop being afraid and step out in faith!

We all have doubts! What are your struggles? Do you believe that Jesus can overcome? Are you inspired by the father in the story? Do you identify with him and his doubts? Take to heart Jesus's response. It wasn't just meant for that father...it was meant for you! Pray for the Lord to help you with your doubts.

Lord, as your word says..."I believe. Help me with my doubts!"   ~Amen.

My Cuties...

Just wanted to share our summer pics. These were for Jason's birthday. The only Picture People close to us is in Akron, which is about 30 minutes away, but I will drive because I love their pics and prices. This photo shoot was very quick...all three cuties were very cooperative (yes, even the little one!)  Enjoy!

Opposites Attract

Jason and I have been married for 12-1/2 years. It's hard to believe that it's been 12-1/2 years; time passes so quickly. However, when I look back over the 12-1/2 years, so much has happened.

Jason and I met in college. We had both been at Hardin-Simmons University the same amount of time and even though HSU is a fairly small university, our paths had not yet crossed.  Jason was an education major and spent most of his time in the education building. I, on the other hand, was a music major and lived in the music building.

In the summer of 1994, we were both seniors taking freshman English in the summer. I know you're wondering why...we weren't flunkies, just procrastinators who had put it off until we couldn't put it off any longer. Jason sat in the chair in front of me. One of the highlights of the class for me was when Jason would walk in each morning. I thought he was so cute and we would say hello to each other and that's about it.

Now, it depends on who you talk to as to why we didn't communicate more than the hello with a friendly smile.  According to Jason, I was being a "music snob" and would only talk to my music major buddies. I just felt like Jason was either very shy or not interested in having a conversation with me.

Fast forward a few months, and thanks to a mutual friend, Jason asked me out on a date. As we began to date and get to know each other, it became obvious rather quickly that we were opposites in many ways.

I think that opposites attract because we see something in the other person that we admire and want to emulate. I can think of another man who walked the earth many years ago that I am attracted to. His name is Jesus. Although I have been created in the image of God, my "humanness" is in every way opposite in nature to who Jesus is. Everything He is, I admire and want more of in my own life.

Friends, do you know Jesus? Do you want to know more about Him? Here is a great book that I recommend to begin with:

Do you know what Jesus has done and continues to do for you? Do you know the love that He has for you? This is another great book to read:

This man, Jesus, wants to be a part of your life. He gave His life for you because He loves you so much. Take the time to get to know Him; your life will never be the same!

"This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn't go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person's failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him."
John 3:16-18 (The Message)

One of Ben's favorites...

One of Abby's favorites...

Perfect Pancakes...

Just had to share this recipe with you...
much better than Bisquick, I promise!

I usually double the recipe to give us a few leftovers...

Dad's Homemade Pancakes
(found on cooks.com)
1 cup flour
1 Tbsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
3 Tbsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
1 cup milk
1 egg

Combine dry ingredients. Add milk, egg and oil. Mix until smooth. Heat non-stick pan over medium heat until water beads. Do not oil. (I use my griddle.) Pour pancake mixture in 1/4 cup amounts. Turn when tops are covered with bubbles an edges look cooked. Remove from heat when pancake stops steaming.

Enjoy!

Happy Birthday Jason!

We started off the day today with presents, Jason's favorite! After a little Wii playing with the new Mario Kart, we headed to the zoo. Little did we know that we would be a part of an abariginal bush band at the zoo today in the Australian Adventure. We even learned an abariginal dance. Too bad we left the camera at home!

Dinner is on the grill: chicken, grilled corn-on-the-cob, LeSueur peas and topped off with Paula Dean's pumpkin pie!

After dinner, we're off to the park for fireworks (not really sure why they're taking place tonight instead of last night, but oh well, what a great way to celebrate your birthday, right?)

Happy birthday today to my amazing husband!
I hope your day is special.
